Sin Nombre
While browsing through netflix, I stumbled upon an amazing foreign film titled "Sin Nombre". The movie details the life of a Mexican teen in ms13. He is helping to initiate his younger brother into the gang. This involves numerous violent initiation rites in order to bring him in including murder and by murder I mean murder or manslaughter in the slaughter meaning. The main character's life changes when the leader kills his current girlfriend on accident, this leads the main character to kill the head of the gang and attempt to run away to the US. This movie reminded me of class and this notion of myth making. What keeps the main character going is the idea that he can recreate himself in the new country. The newness of the US and the mystery surrounding it allow him to hope. the main character's story parallels a family traveling to the US. A brother Daughter and father attempt to travel to the US as well, hoping to gain new opportunity. The fact that the country remains unknown to the family allows them to fill in the blanks so to speak. It was interesting to apply the class reading to the movie.
