The medium of movies and television has created a completely different world than that of written books. One of the big questions that arises among avid readers and movie goers is how do you compare a book to a movie? Here are some things that I think work well comparing the two and some things that don't work.
You can compare the general storyline, but not specific points. If a movie completely deviates from the original storyline, that distinction can be made. If the book was a tragedy and the movie a light-hearted comedy, than what we have is a completely different story. Small distinctions however, I don't think are as easily compared. The medium of film is significantly different from the medium of writing and in such creates a different atmosphere for the reader/watcher. Arguing over smaller details doesn't make the movie any less good, it simply makes it different. Directors do well to stick to the heart of the story and the general storyline. A good director will hope to capture the overall theme and "heart" of the book as best he or she can.
