Jacqueline Thornley- Free Choice #1
I stumbled across a quote from C.S. Lewis that I really liked. He said “someday you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.” Perhaps it’s because at heart I’m still that kid on the playground swinging on the swings till I swore I was really flying, but that quote just really sticks with me. When did we become too old for fairy tales? At what age is playing make believe not acceptable? I think on some level we never really stop playing make believe, we just don’t include others in our game. Childhood “pretending” turns into adult manipulating. Adults have reputations to worry about and futures to secure, whereas children and the older generation (which is perhaps who Lewis was referring to) typically care less what people think of them. But I wonder, who really enjoys life to the fullest, the adult in the “real world” or the child in the land of make believe?
