The Great Sin, by C.S. Lewis

My favorite quote from Lewis' essay on pride is: "Now what you want to get clear is that Pride is essentially competitive- is competitive by its very nature- while the other vices are competitive only, so to speak,  by accident."  I really like this quote because it is very true.  Pride is competitive to its very core.  Pride derives from the need to be better than others.  Pride always goes hand in hand with "enmity", according to Lewis.  Lewis believes that the devil causes pride, which he calls the "Dictatorship of Pride".  He also compares pride to cancer, which is a spot-on comparison.  He says, "For Pride is spiritual cancer: it eats up the very possibility of love, or contentment, or even common sense."  Lewis also states at the end of his essay, "If you think you are not conceited, it means you are very conceited indeed." I really like this essay because I feel as if it is a good check on my own pride when I read it. Lewis makes astute points and connections and he really sees into the different vices that humans can possess.
