The Magician's Nephew

In the beginning of the semester we discussed Tolkien's essay on fairy stories and fairy vs. faerie.  I thought it was really fitting that in The Magician's Nephew, Lewis discusses old English fairy magic.  I've read a few contemporary novels in which old English fairy magic is mentioned, and I think it is a really cool part of English folklore.  In The Magician's Nephew, Uncle Andrew explains that his godmother, Mrs. Lefay, was one of the last humans to have fairy blood.  This fairy magic dust that Uncle Andrew was supposed to destroy after Mrs. Lefay's death is what opened the gates to the creation of Narnia in the whole book series.  This small bit of fairy magic opened up an entire world to Diggory and Polly, and Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy.  It also helped bring evil in Narnia as well since Diggory and Polly went to Charn and brought Jadis into Narnia.  I think it's really cool that Lewis kicked all of that off with old English fairy folklore.
