Rachel Goodwyn - Outside Reading

The Screwtape Letters is one of the books I had read before entering into this Lewis class and I really enjoyed. I thought it was so interesting how Lewis decided to write the letters from the viewpoint of the devil and hwo the letter were sent between a uncle, who is a senior demon, and his nephew, teaching him the ways to trip up a person who struggles with a Christian life. I have always learned from my faith that the devil is a real thing and that he takes an active role, so as a Christian it is important to take an active stance in living out my own Christian faith day to day. Screwtape becomes the mentor of his nephew Wormwood, the society and lifestyle is so backwards from the way I have been raised in a Christian household, where giving to other and helping others is better than its counterpart of looking out for number one and getting everything possible for one’s self. It is actually a bit frightening the image that is conjured up by Lewis in this literary work that demon take special attention to tempt and lead people to “Their Father Below.” Causes me as a Christian to think more about how I am acting out my faith personally and being more aware about the things I am tempted by. For the demons in the story, they are chastised when they mess up and allow the person or in this case “the patient” grow closer to the Lord or when they allow them to convert to Christianity. Although it is frightening, it is also interesting that they must take such careful attention o try to mess up those following the Lord. Taking this class has caused me to want to read this book again, maybe I can learn more things now that I have taken a class that has taught me a lot about Lewis and his way of thinking and writing.
