I offer up the following question: Did Orual actually love Psyche? I am not asking if she ever loved her, but rather does the possessive and destructive love she exhibits later on pass for love? She used her "love" for Psyche as a manipulative weapon. Furthermore, it is quite obvious that anything she did or said out of love for Psyche was actually a result of her own self-pity.
What is love then? According to Lewis it appears to be selflessness, whereas Orual's pretense of love is wholly and completely selfish. In stark contrast to Orual's selfish "love" is Psyche's selfless love. She selflessly sacrifices herself for the people she loves. More importantly, her love to her husband is shown through her obedience to him. She has given up herself to become a part of him, she is no longer "her own" (128). Thus it would seem that obedience and selflessness are the ultimate acts of love in Lewis's viewpoint.
