Jacqueline Thornley- Outside Reading #4
I am taking a class this semester on terrorism. Much of terrorism is storytelling. Terrorists tell their stories to people they think will support or join them. They also tell their stories to those they are fighting in order to be understood. On the other side, the nation terrorists are acting against tell their citizens that attacks are unjustified. Both sides tell lots of stories and create myths. And both sides see their own justice. So which myth is right? Is it the story that leads to fewer death and less violence? Is there a universal measure of the “rightness” of myth? If I have learned anything from that class it is that when the myth and story is centered around terrorism, there will be no winner.
