I think this was first time (definitely not the last) one of Lewis’ books radically changed my point of view – namely when Ransom sees The Unman followed by the ‘insect’ creature in the cave, he is at once horrified by its appearance. Being the reader, you have no choice but to follow this impression and, as such, I imagined a very strange, terrible creature at first. That Lewis then turns this impression around as soon as the Unman is gone is, in my opinion, pure genius. It forced me to retain the same image of what was once a horrific creature and now must be seen in terms of the newly enlightened Ransom; to see everything as having a beauty from being created as opposed to being so judgmental. Though I can’t say I’m very objective just yet, I’m definitely working on it. And if that isn’t persuasive writing, I don’t know what is. And here is the picture I drew from my impression:
