Zach Wilson--Alternative Topic 1

I was intrigued by the class discussing the difference/lack thereof between magic and technology.  I feel as though there is certainly a difference between the two, or at least technology is a subset of magic.  A definition of terms is crucial to this discussion, so I looked at the Merriam-Webster dictionary for both.  Magic is defined as: "the art of producing a desired effect or result through the use of incantation or various other techniques that presumably assure human control of supernatural agencies or the forces of nature."  Technology is defined as "the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science."
Magic uses techniques to reach the supernatural or the forces of nature.  The forces of nature are not tangible or elementary, but are more of ideas or laws of physics or other sciences.  Technology is different than magic in this regard because it creates a product that then relates with the tangible world.  Magic and technology are similar in that they use technique in order to relate tangible and intangible.  Magic uses more of a mythical framework, with mythical implications, that practicers of magic use spells and incantations.  Technology is more technical in that it uses science and engineering to carry out its goals.  However the end goals of magic and technology could be similar.
