Christian Holmes- Till We Have Faces 2

I really love the narrative commentary on idolatry in this book. This idolatry is rooted in a perversion of love. Orual, demonstrates an overwhelming conviction of Eros love. She desperately desires the company, affection, and attention of her sister Psyche. When she loses her sister, Orual becomes desperate and depressed. It is as if the foundation for her whole identity and purpose has collapsed around her. If one were to bare in mind Lewis' Christian background, then it would follow that Lewis would define idolatry as treating anything or anyone other than God as God. Seeing as God is meant to be the sole center of any persons life, it follows that Orual was committing idolatry in the way she viewed and valued her sister. However, where Orual exhibited a great level of Eros love, she exhibited almost no attributes of Agape love. Her love for Psyche seemed almost entirely self-focused. Thusly, she exhibits a form of perverted and idolatrous love. Lewis, using his narrative paradigm uses the character of Orual to communicate the tragedy of misdirected love.
