Disappointment
My biggest pet peeve in reading a series of books is when the last book ends without a bang. I hate it when series are so entertaining and climatic and they just end so blah. Unfortunately this is how I feel about the Chronicles of Narnia. All of the books had great adventures that sucked me in, though I also didn’t really like The Voyage of the Dawn Treader that much, because the adventures were not as exciting. The Last Battle seemed so anti-climatic to me. I do not know if it is because the title makes it seem like an epic battle was going to be fought but that is not what happened. I did like the beginning of the book but when Jill and Eustace were fighting the last battle and get thrown into the hut on the hill and get transported to the “real” Narnia and see all their old friends I was disappointed. I so badly wanted all the humans from all the books to get to come into Narnia one last time to fight of evil for good. I was really sad that everyone, except Susan, had died in a train accident. I also didn’t like how Susan was just written off, I wanted her to come back later then the other humans and redeem herself for her betrayal of Narnia and help fight in a giant battle. All of the other books in the series had a grand adventure with a happy ending and the Last Battle just was so lackluster, the adventure was just okay and everyone died in the end. Even though Aslan told the children that only some of them could return to Narnia I really wanted Aslan to go back on his word and bring everyone back. I just was disappointed that the past Kings and Queens of Narnia were killed in their human world I wanted them to come back and after the last battle live a long and happy life in Narnia. I wish so baldy that Lewis was alive so that I could ask him why did he ended it this way. The Last Battle was a small battle in which Jill and Eustace and King Tirian all are easily overcome by the Calormenes. After reading the books Narnia seemed like a place where evil can exist but good always will triumph and in the final book evil overtakes Narnia and then that Narnia is ended and all the good animals are creatures are allowed into the real Narnia. Maybe I am just sensitive and once I get attached to characters it is really hard to see their stories end. Also the Narnia I have fallen in love with is destroyed at the end. I do like that they are all happy in the real Narnia/heaven, but what happens to Susan… there are just so many questions left unanswered. I just wish it would have all ended differently.
